This die-cast metal airplane model comes in 1:120 scale with plastic stand and is approximately 2"D x 6"W x 4"H. This detailed replica recreates the authentic F-104G as used by NASA including its colors and markings. For Adult Collectors ages 14+. First taking flight in 1954, the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was designed as a supersonic interceptor, and used as a fighter-bomber throughout the Cold War. It was developed in response to feedback from Korean War pilots seeking a smaller, lighter aircraft optimized for climbing. Powered by turbojets, it could reach a top speed of 1,528 miles per hour. The F-104 jet fighter flies at twice the speed of sound. NASA used the F-104 for high-speed flight tests, including thruster controls, advanced flight technologies, and as a chase plane. It was key in testing the durability of Space Shuttle heat shield tiles in flight conditions and other components of the Space Shuttle. Its nickname is "the missile with a man in it," and it is a favorite attraction at air shows. Various F-104 aircraft are on display, including at the Air Force Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, and the Embrey-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ.
