PS5810-1 Curtiss JN-4 Jenny U.S. Air Mail service (1:100) The JN-4 "Jenny" was a single-engine, 2-seater biplane built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army. It was widely used during World War I to train new pilots, but it saw a more significant role in aviation history as a mail-carrying airplane in the 1920s. The U.S. Army Air Corps transferred six JN-4H airplanes to the U.S. Post Office Department towards the end of WWI. These Jennys were first to be used on the regularly scheduled Air Mail Service, which operated on a route between Washington DC, Philadelphia, and New York City. On May 15, 1918, airplane ?38262 piloted by Army Lt. George Boyle was the first airplane to fly U.S. mail, ushering in the Post Office's new Air Mail Service. President Woodrow Wilson and other officials were on hand to witness this historic event. The President handed his personal letter of greetings to a very young Army Air Service pilot at Potomac Park polo grounds in Washington, DC, to be flown to the Mayor of New York City, via a relay stopover at Philadelphia, PA. The Boeing P-26 was the first American all-metal production fighter aircraft. It entered squadron service in 1933 and was the first pursuit monoplane used by the U.S. Army Air Corps. Popularly known as the “Peashooter,” the monoplane featured an open cockpit, fixed landing gear, and wings braced with wire rather than rigid struts, making the aircraft lighter and reducing drag. Acclaimed by pilots for its speed and maneuverability, the small but feisty P-26 formed the core of pursuit squadrons throughout the United States. This P-26 Peashooter was based at Selfridge Field in Michigan and the Fairfield Air Depot in Ohio from 1934 until 1938. In 1938, it was transferred to serve in the Canal Zone, where it remained in service until 1942, when the U.S. Army Air Corps transferred the aircraft to the Guatemalan Air Force. It continued serving with the Guatemalan Air Force from 1943 to 1954. In 1957, the government of Guatemala donated the P-26 Peashooter back to the United States, where it was later restored by the U.S. Air Force in the colors of the 34th Attack Squadron stationed at March Field, California.
