JANET, also known as JANET Airlines, is a call sign as well as the unofficial name that has been given to a fleet of highly classified passenger aircraft and stands for "Joint Air Network for Employee Transportation." Operated for the US Department of the Air Force, these aircraft are used to fly both military and contractor employees from a private terminal at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas to covert, special access facilities, most notably, Area 51 and the Tonopah Test at the Nevada National Security Site.
In the early 1990's, Boeing worked on an aircraft that would replace older models of its popular 737 jetliner. In June 1993, Boeing launched the 737-X Program after receiving an order from Southwest Airlines for 63 airliners. This program resulted in the 737 Next Generation (737NG) family of aircraft, and would include four different variants: the 737-600, -700, -800 and -900.
The Next Generation 737s incorporated a larger wing, more powerful engines, and could fly longer ranges with higher payloads than the older 737 models. The 737-700 was the first variant to enter production, and the first delivery was made to Southwest Airlines in December 1997. In September 1994, the -800 was launched, and the first aircraft was delivered to Hapag-Lloyd of Germany in the spring of 1998. The -800 is a longer version of the -700 and can carry up to 189 passengers in single class seating. SAS became the launch customer of the 737-600, the smallest of the Next Generation Family, with seating for 110 to 132 passengers. The first aircraft was delivered to SAS in the third quarter of 1998. The 737-900 is the longest version of the 737NG Family and was launched in November 1997, with an order from Alaska Airlines. Boeing has also introduced the 737-900ER, which offers greater range with a higher payload capacity.
Today many of the Next Generation 737s have incorporated blended winglets, which help to increase lift, reduce drag, fuel consumption and engine wear. AA more enhanced winglet system has also been introduced featuring a scimitar winglet along a shorter below the wing line winglet. Although the 737NG Program has been Boeing's most successful airliner program ever, it has been superseded by the even more improved 737 MAX Family of aircraft.
